Riding Alone vs Riding with a Group

Jake Robison - April 24, 2024

Riding alone down the road, free on your motorcycle can make for a thrilling adventure. Riding in a group allows for amazing experiences. Both options can lead to a lot of fun, new sites, and fantastic times in new areas, but it’s important to figure out how you want to ride before you go. When it comes to fun, safety, and security, is it better to cycle alone or in a group?

Benefits of Riding Alone

If you’ve started looking at motorcycles for sale with a dream of hitting the open road, you may be thinking about taking solo trips to wherever you want to go. There are quite a few benefits to doing this.

Go Whenever You Want

When you’re riding by yourself, you are the only one deciding where to go. You choose the length of the trip, where you want to go, and where you want to stop on the way. If you change your mind in the middle of the trip, you can go somewhere else without worry.

Spur-Of-The-Moment Trips Possible

If you are reviewing your bucket list and decide that now’s the time to go, nothing is stopping you from heading out. There’s no need to plan and make sure the trip fits everyone’s schedule. You can go on a spur-of-the-moment trip and enjoy every minute.

Stop When You Need To

If you’re starting to feel a little tired, getting hungry, or need to use the bathroom, you can pull over wherever it’s safe and stop. You don’t have to coordinate with others or wait until a pre-planned stop to pull over with others.

Can be Educational

It can be an educational opportunity when you go alone. You’ll quickly learn what you need to have with you when you go on short or long trips, how to fix your motorcycle if there’s an issue, and your preferences for being on the go.

Downsides of Riding Alone

Don’t forget that there are downsides to riding alone. Keep them in mind before embarking on a solo trip so you know what to expect when you go.

Less Access to Help

If anything happens, it’s not as easy to get help. You’ll have to find a mechanic if you aren’t sure how to fix an issue with your bike because no one will be on the road ready to help.

Can be Boring

When you’re riding solo, it can be a little bit boring. There isn’t anyone to talk to and you can’t point out interesting sites or something fun to try. However, if you prefer silence, this might not necessarily be a downside for you.

Can be Dangerous

It can be dangerous to ride alone because there isn’t anyone experienced there if you end up in an accident. Plus, drivers may not notice a single motorcycle on the road when they would definitely notice a larger group riding together.

Benefits of Riding With a Group

Are you dreaming of hitting the road with a group of your closest friends? There are some benefits of riding in a group.

Can Be a Safer Option

It can be much safer to ride with a group of friends. Others on the road are more likely to see you while you’re riding if you’re with a group of bikers instead of on your own and your friends will stop and call for emergency services if there’s an accident.

Take Advantage of Experience

Your friends may have more experience riding bikes. If something does break down, you may be able to get help fixing it instead of having to find a mechanic and delay the trip. This is a huge benefit if you’re a newer rider, as you can learn a lot by watching others.

Prevent Getting Lost

With multiple people riding together, it’s less likely you’ll get lost on the road or make a wrong turn. If you do, the others are there with you and everyone can work together to get back in the right direction. It’s also more likely someone will notice that everyone is going the wrong way faster.

Faster Help in an Emergency

If there is an emergency, like if your motorcycle breaks down on the highway, you will have friends there to keep you safe and provide help. If there’s an accident, they’ll know what to do to help before emergency services arrive. You won’t be alone if anything goes wrong.

Downsides to Riding With a Group

Keep in mind that there can be some downsides to riding in a group, too. Think about the following when you’re considering a group trip.

Everyone Starts and Stops Together

Riding in a group means that no one is left behind. While that’s definitely good, it also means that if one person has to stop, everyone does. The trip doesn’t start until everyone is ready and there may be more frequent stops depending on the length of the trip, experience of the riders, and more.

Can be Conflicts

Like with any adventure with friends, there can be conflicts. It is crucial to have someone who can mediate if there are any conflicts, otherwise, they could spell the end of the trip – and perhaps the end of riding together as a group.

More Planning is Needed

More planning is always needed when you ride in a group. Schedules have to match and there has to be an idea of where everyone is going before the trip begins. Often, trips are planned with plenty of details to ensure everyone can enjoy them.

Which One is Right for You?

There’s no right or wrong answer when you start thinking about whether to go alone or with a group. Both are a fantastic way to set off on new adventures and have pros and cons to consider. Think about what you might prefer, what would be safer for you, and what you picture when you dream of hopping on your motorcycle and heading down the road. Are you dreaming of a solo trip or a getaway with a group of friends?
