Retired Legends: Discontinued Bikes You Can Still Buy (And Why You Should)

When you decide to purchase a used bike, you may head to the local dealership to check out what is available. Why settle for a motorcycle anyone can own when you can invest in a model that is discontinued but remains in high demand? Who wouldn’t want to own a bike with a cult following or unique features? With time and effort, you can find this machine.

While you may not find the rarest motorcycle ever made when conducting this search, there are plenty of excellent bikes to choose from. Consider looking at motorcycles for sale that aren’t found at most dealerships. If you are fortunate enough to find a model that is hard to come by, you’ll cherish it for years to come. What are some models you might wish to look for as you embark on this treasure hunt?

Harley-Davidson XR750

Harley-Davidson offered the XR750 between 1970 and 1980. This model is ideal for flat-track racing and has brought home numerous championships. However, it is best known as the bike Evel Knievel used in countless stunts. Who wouldn’t want to own a motorcycle capable of the feats this legend carried out?

This race bike features an air-cooled twin engine offering 748cc displacement. The max power for this model is 82HP, and it provides a mix of raw power and lightweight agility. Many people have questioned why Harley didn’t make a road version of this motorcycle. Any collector would be proud to own this machine.

Kawasaki Ninja GPz900R

The movie Top Gun remains a fan favorite today. Anyone who has seen this movie (and who hasn’t?) has gotten a look at the Kawasaki Ninja GPz900R. Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell owned one, and every motorcycle owner wanted to do the same. At the time of the movie, it was the fastest motorcycle available. Pairing it alongside fighter jets made it even more noteworthy.

People already associated the Ninja name with speed, and this bike solidified that perception. The introduction of this bike launched a speed war between Japanese motorcycle manufacturers. While every motorcycle lover would enjoy owning the bike used in the movie, its current location remains unknown.

Ducati 916

Who says a motorcycle has to be plain? Individuals who want a fantastic bike that looks amazing wherever it goes should invest in a Ducati 916. Manufactured between 1994 and 1998, this bike is known for its breathtaking looks and outstanding performance. It features sleek, aggressive lines, and the manufacturer opted to equip it with exhausts under the seat and a single-sided swingarm. The V-twin engine of this bike offered outstanding power and handling, making it a favorite on the track. Today, motorcycle owners often look for this bike to benefit from its design and capabilities.

Harley-Davidson Fat Boy

When people think of the Harley-Davidson Fat Boy, they likely bring to mind Arnold Schwazzenger riding this bike in the movie Terminator 2. Over the years, Harley made several changes to the bike’s design, but it remained a rider favorite throughout the 90s. A rider can spend an entire day checking out the sights as they cruise down the road, knowing they are on a motorcycle designed for cruising. Riders know they are making a wise investment with this purchase.

Indian Chief

The 1922 to 1953 Indian Chief motorcycle is an American classic, and it is easy to see why. This bike features Art Deco styling and a V-twin engine. People love the wide handlebars and deep fenders. This vintage styling allows the bike to shine wherever it is ridden. In addition to its appeal, the Indian Chief is known for its outstanding craftsmanship and historical significance. Anyone who has yet to see this amazing machine with its excellent engineering should plan a trip to the National Motorcycle Museum, where one is on display. However, call before visiting, as the bike is on loan from its owner.

Vincent Black Lightning

Ask any motorcycle collector which bike they would love to own, and the answer will likely be the Vincent Black Lightning. Vincent motorcycles remain hard to come by, but finding a Black Lightning is like finding a needle in a haystack. Experts believe only 33 of these motorcycles were made, but some state that several never left the factory.

Today, only 19 remain in their original condition. The machine's performance set it apart when it launched in 1948, but the price was well beyond the average rider. Motorcycle racers were typically the only ones able to afford one of these rides, and the company discontinued production in 1952.

Britten V1000

Thirty-three may seem like a small number when it comes to motorcycle production figures, but there is one even smaller. Only ten Britten V1000 motorcycles were built. Riders consider this model to be the king of cult motorcycles thanks to its exclusivity.

John Britten got together with a group of friends to come up with the idea for this motorcycle, design it, and build it. While only ten were constructed, never assume they lacked features or innovation. The team used carbon fiber throughout the bike and placed the radiator underneath

the seat. These bikes featured a frameless chassis and front suspension when they were built in 1991. Many of these features are considered premium today.

This motorcycle took home top prize at Daytona’s Battle of the Twins and broke numerous world records for bikes in its class. Imagine powering one of these machines. It’s a dream of many riders, and a person dedicated to finding the perfect ride may uncover one of these treasures with enough time and effort.

These bikes may appear on your list of dream motorcycles. However, you might have others on this list, as well. Many motorcyclists would love to own a Honda CBX1000, a Norton Commando 961, or a Yamaha VMAX. Each rider is unique in their preferences, so every biker should take the time to find the ideal machine for their needs. People who are committed to undertaking this treasure hunt will find plenty of bikes they love but only one or two they cannot live without. When this bike is found, act quickly, so it doesn’t slip away.
